What Happened?
As the events of January 6th, 2021 are coming to an end, we as Americans are shocked. On Wednesday the 6th the United States Capitol building was stormed by Trump supporters. While this was going on, inside the building members of Congress were working on trying to ratify the election. They all had to be evacuated as the mob made their way through the Capitol building. Once inside the supports broke into the Senator's offices, and caused some damage as well. By the time the day was over, according to the Washington Post Staff, four people were left dead. One was shot inside the building and three others died of medical emergencies. It was made clear what these supports wanted; to stop the ratification of the election. According to Sabrina Tavernise and Matthew Rosenberg of the New York Times a man inside the building said "Yeah, we stopped the vote!".
What's Next?
After these events transpired a lot of people have questions. I mean it's not every day an angry mob storms the US Capitol building. A lot of people are asking how the mob managed to even breach the Capitol doors. "The Capitol police had lost control and no one was coming to save Congress." (Demirjian). Lots of people are in shock that this even happened. I myself thought that our Nations's Capitol would have better security. The Nation was in true shock as all the images of what happened started coming out. I was shocked to see people scaling the walls and inside the Senator's offices.
Public Reaction
I know I can speak for myself and my peers when I say I was absolutely astonished at what had happened. It felt like something out of a dystopian movie, where the citizens try and overthrow the government. Besides the US, the eyes of the world watched as well. According to Haynes from Time Magazine, one person from China had this to say, “There are no rules at all and no respect for the law,” said another. “This is the ‘democracy’ they boast about.”. It's quite sad to see how other countries are mocking us. Australia offered us these kind words, “This is a difficult time for the United States clearly, they’re a great friend of Australia and they’re one of the world’s greatest democracies. And so, we just, our thoughts are with them and we hope funor that peaceful transition to take place.”(Haynes). This is a huge event that will not be forgotten. It will be put in history books all around the world, and I think this is something we shouldn't forget. We as a country must learn from our mistakes so in the future this doesn't happen again.

I really liked your article and I thought your summary of the event was really good. What can we do to make sure that this doesn't happen again?
ReplyDeleteSophie - I think what we need to do first is show that something like this won't be tolerated again. I think next, we should try and become less divided and more unified as a country. That will take time but I think it's something that must be done, seeing as what just happened.
DeleteI loved how you explained the whole situation for the audience. It was brief but great! What do you believe will happen to the people who stormed the building?
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting how quickly the information changed as we moved away from the events, such as the police officer dying and the images of how the police were overpowered. Some of those videos are really shocking.
